Are governments delivering on their energy targets?
Every national target for power, transport fuels, industry, households and fossil supply, set against the latest official progress figure and the pace needed to hit it. Figures come only from government sources or official documents they cite.
Targets against delivery
Pace check
Pace achieved in the latest year as a share of the pace still needed. Dashed lines mark 60% (off track below) and 90% (on track above); bars past the solid line are ahead of schedule.
How status is judged
- Met: the official figure has reached the target.
- On track: the latest year's pace is at least 90% of the pace still needed.
- Behind: 60% to 90% of the pace needed.
- Off track: under 60% of the pace needed.
- Too early: the rule is not yet in force, or no official progress figure exists.
- Reversed: the government has withdrawn or cut the commitment.
The same rule applies to every country. A status set by hand always carries its reason, shown in the record.

Where every figure comes from
Only government sources: the Gazette of India, PIB releases, ministry and regulator sites (MNRE, MoPNG, Ministry of Coal, DAE) and written answers in Parliament. For the world: the UNFCCC NDC registry, the European Commission, Eurostat and the EEA, China's State Council and statistics bureau, the White House and Congress, and Japan's METI and Ministry of the Environment.
IRENA figures are used where governments asked it to track a pledge, such as the COP28 tripling goal. Energy Institute statistics, which ministries cite, fill gaps such as India's gas share. A news report is used only to find the official document, which is then cited directly. The build rejects any other source.
